Supreme Court Voting Rights Act ruling draws Southern racism critique
VOTING RIGHT ACT SCOTUS WASHES SINS AWAY by J.D. Crowe, politicalcartoons.com
On June 25, 2013, the Supreme Court struck down key provisions of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder. The ruling ended federal preclearance requirements for certain states with histories of discrimination. The cartoon shows a figure representing the South emerging from baptismal waters proclaiming racism washed away. Other figures appear in the background, some in suits and some in white robes. The image uses religious imagery to comment on the decision's implications for civil rights enforcement.
Congress Blocks USDA Effort to Limit Pizza and Fries in School Lunches
RJ Matson, Portland, ME
In this 2011 cartoon, members of Congress dressed as cafeteria workers squeeze tomato paste onto pizza while an USDA official is tossed into a trash bin labeled nutrition guidelines. The food industry lobby stands by approvingly as a student thanks the lawmakers for being cooler than the previous lunch lady. The image captures congressional action that year to block stricter USDA rules on sodium, potatoes and what counts as a vegetable in school meals. Lawmakers effectively preserved the status of pizza and french fries on cafeteria menus by redefining tomato paste servings.
