On June 25 2013 the Supreme Court issued a ruling in Shelby County v Holder that struck down the coverage formula used to determine which jurisdictions required federal preclearance for voting changes under the Voting Rights Act. The decision ended the requirement for certain states mostly in the South to obtain approval before altering election laws. Critics argued the move opened the door to new restrictions on voting access while supporters said it reflected updated conditions and equal treatment of states.
