Blood-Soaked Printing Press Captures Toll on Journalists
Dale Cummings, Canada, PoliticalCartoons.com
A damaged vintage printing press sits amid scattered sheets as red fluid spreads across the floor in this drawing by Dale Cummings. The image responds to the October 2018 killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the kingdom's Istanbul consulate. Khashoggi had written critically of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for The Washington Post. The drawing uses the press as a stand-in for the profession itself, showing physical destruction and blood to represent the human cost. Publication came weeks after the murder drew global condemnation and strained U.S.-Saudi ties under the Trump administration.
