Analyzing Editorial Cartoons

Objectives: Students will be able to interpret and understand the opinions expressed in editorial cartoons.

Materials: Computer lab with internet access-1 station per 2 students; handout

Activities: Analyze editorial cartoons to achieve a deeper understanding of major news events.

Teacher Procedure Student Activities

Set Ask students their opinion about some news story. For example; should the US be spending so much on coordinating NASA missions with Mir?

Discussion.

Debate.

Instruct

Direct students to log onto interent & proceed to www.cagle.com & select editorial cartoons contents page from the left hand navigation column then select editorial cartoons:page 1 from the contents page. Proceed through cartoons pages.

Ask students to scan the cartoons and choose what they feel is the most interesting point of view shown.

Distribute handout and review the questions.

Active listening & opening web pages.

Practice

Circulate to keep students on task.

Act as resource.

Students will answer the questionaire about the cartoon selected.
Closure Direct discussion. Select students to present their interpretation of the cartoonists' point of view. Class will all look at the same cartoon as it is presented.


 Homework: Repeat the exercise with an editorial cartoon from the paper. Attatch the cartoon to the questionaire.

 Evaluation: In-class presentations, written assignment and discussion.
